Effective Keyword Research

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

The key to getting targeted traffic to your website is simple.  Optimisation your website for the ‘right’ key phrases.  Choose phrases that are too competitive and you will not be able to gain high enough rankings to bring in any traffic. Choose key phrases with a low number of searches per month and you may acheive top rankings but very few visitors.

Finding the right keywords is very time consuming, but this should not be rushed.  A mistake in keyword selection and optimising your site for the wrong phrases could cost you a lot of time and money.  I’m not going to go into ways to find the best keywords here but I have just started to use a tool that I should have bought years ago.  It has saved me so much time as all the information I need for keyword research is in one place.

So if you’re serious about SEO and need to do extensive keyword research in the quickest possible time than take a look at Keyword Elite.  Another great product from Brad Callen.  I have been using SEO Elite  for a few years for back link analysis.   If you click on this link you can get both products for price of one. Yahoo and Microsoft Join Forces

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Yahoo is planning to scrap their search engine and paid ads next year and join forces with MicroSoft using their Bing search engine.  If you don’t already optimise your website for Bing, now is the time to start. Bing is predicted to have a market share of at least 15% but probably more next year.

Yahoo Site Explorer curently provides a great free tool for analysing incoming links but this may disappear next year. There are a number of tools available that we currently use to analyse backlinks, I recommend: IBP and SEO Elite.

Why not get a professional to carry out all you SEO work and free up your time to run your business and concentrate on doing what you do best.

Do Link Exchanges Work?

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I have just spent the past few hours going through some of the hundreds of links requests I have received over the past few weeks.  I would say I reject around 85% as they do not meet my criteria.  Even though my requirements are posted on the my websites people still fill in the form with the hopes I might add their link.  This is a waste of time for me and the person requesting the link.

So please, if you are requesting a link on someone’s website, read their requirements first. If you can’t meet there requirements move onto the next site.  You could always send an email explaining you don’t quite meet the requirements but you still think a link on your site would be advantageous to them.

Link exchanges should be benifical to both parties. When you exchnage links the page your link is add to is critical,

1. It must be relevant.
2. It must be visible to the search engines
3. It must not have hundreds of out going links.
4. Having your keyword in the anchor text is a big advantage

If these conditions are not meet then there is little point exchanging links.

So, some link exchanges can work, but be careful, if you start exchanging links with just anyone you could get your site into a “bad neigbourhood” which will have a negative effect on your website ranking.

Link exchanges can improve your search engine rankings but only if they provide your website with quality incoming links.

Google Has Learnt to Crawl Flash

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Gaining top search engine rankings for Flash websites has always been a problem for Internet marketers.  We normally have to create other pages for Google to crawl to enable the site to get indexed.   Hopefully this is now going to be a thing of the past as Google have developed a new algorithm which will crawl Flash swf files following menus and buttons which should improve visibility of Flash content.

Affiliate Marketing eBooks

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Today I bought yet another ebook on how to make money on the Internet with affiliate programs. I’m always on the lookout for new ideas so if I buy a book and learn one new thing I think I have done well.

I am surprised at the number of “new” books being published with old ideas, especially search engine optimisation information.  The book I am currently reading promises an easy way to make money on the Internet as always. It appears to be just another take on the Google Cash book written by Chris Carpenter a few years ago.  It even recommends software from a web site over 3 years old that if you used it today you web site would probably get banned by Google!

Its seems the best thing about most money making ebooks these days is the sales letters!  Still, I’ll ask for a refund from this one and keep trying.  When I find some thing new I’ll let you know.

In the mean time here’s the “secrets” that everyone seems to be writing about.

1. Find an affiliate program on Clickbank. Pick a program that has high gravity score (100+ is good)
2. Create a squeeze page (email capture page)
3. Send traffic to the squeeze page using PPC
4. Email your list to upsell other affiliate programs.
5. Repeat

I suppose I could have written 10 pages each of the above and sold it for 50 bucks but I think there are enough people doing that already.

Introduction To Search Engine Optimization

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Search engine optimization is divided into two parts. On page optimization and off page optimization.

On page optimization is making sure you have the correct density of your keywords in the right place on your web pages. It is no good putting your keywords on your page hundreds of times, this will only get your site banned.  Your keywords need to be in the title tag, description and keyword meta tags, headings, alt tags and in the main body of your web page in the correct position and the correct number of times.  A good way to work out the correct keyword density is to look at the top 10 web sites for your keyphrase.  Getting this correct will not guarantee a top 10 position but it will help.

More import these days is off page optimization.  This means the number and quality of incoming links to your web site.  The text of the link also is important.  2 examples of the effect of off page optimization are:

1. Search for “click here” on Google.  You will find the Adobe web site is number 1.  The words “click here” do not appear on the page but thousands of web sites have a link to this page with the text “click here to download”

2. Search for “miserable failure” on Google and you will find George W Bush’s biography on the White House web site.  Obviously the words “miserable failure” are no where to be found on this web page but there are a few hundred incoming links with the keyphrase in the title.  This is known as a search engine bomb.

Search engine optimization is very time consuming so it is well worth buying software that can automate a lot of the work.  I use and recommend IBP.  Try the 30 day free trial at Axandra.com
