If you have not got and idea about what your web site is going to be about, now is the time to give this some thought. Also what is the purpose of your web site, is to complement an existing off line business, is it for a non-profit organisation, is it to sell a product or is it simply to make money on the Internet.
If you already know what your web site is going to be about then that’s fine. If not you need to consider the topic carefully. To make money of the Internet you first need to choose a profitable niche. There must be enough people searching for your product or service and there needs to be some but not a lot of competition. (If there is no competition then you have probably chosen something with no demand. A little competition is good, it gives you something you can look at and improve on!)
So to choose your niche, think of something you know about or are keen to learn about, use the keyword tools on this site to find out how much of a demand there is and seek out the competition to see what they are offering and work out how you can do it better.

There are now plenty of cheap hosting companies to choose from. Too many in fact! I recommend that you do not use a free hosting service. These can be unreliable, have poor suport and maybe not all the features you need.
If you are serious about your web business you should invest the $10 per month for good reliable hosting.
Make sure there is enough storage space and there is going to be enough bandwidth for when your web site gets successful. If you are using audio or video especially you may need a lot of storage and bandwidth.
If you are using certain programs make sure you host can run them. I prefer Unix/Linux based servers as they are cheaper and can run most scripts. If you have asp code then you will need to use a Windows host which can be more expensive.
Most of my web site are hosted with Sytec Computers who can give you 15,00MB of storage and 300GB bandwidth for $5.75 per month.

Before you can publish your web site on the Internet you need to decide on a domain name. There are 2 schools of thought on this.
1. Use your company name.
2. Use your best key phrase.
I think in certain situations both of these are correct. It also depends on your marketing strategy. If you are a well know company or brand that people will be searching for on the Internet then you should use your company or brand name. If you are just starting out on the Internet and you are selling blue widgets then bluewidgets.com would be a great domain name. You could always use both. Create your web site and optimize it for the search engines with the domain name bluewidgets.com and then also use your company name as a domain name and redirect it to your other domain.
For example redirect widgetco.com to bluewidgets.com. This way you can advertise your own company name off line and have a domain name optimized for your best key word.

I get lots of people asking me questions about building and promoting web sites but by far the most popular question is: Where do I start?
With all the information now on the Internet you get information overload so you can spend all of your time reading and learning about web design and promotion and not actually doing anything.
Just start and do something!
My first web site looked terrible! it did not make any money and after a few months I closed it down. The next site was not much better. Now I have a handful of web sites all making money and each site I build normally makes more than the last.
If I had not build that first web site I would still be making no money on the Internet and reading about everyone else who was making money.
Step 1: Get your own domain name and web site hosting.
There are plenty of cheap hosting companies so if you are serious about your Internet business don’t use free hosting as this can be unreliable.
I use and recommend Sytec for my web hosting. $5.75 and you get a free domain name as well.
