Is Your Website in a Bad Neighbourhood?

In my last post I mentioned that being in a “bad neighbourhood” could affect your search engine rankings.  Your neighbourhood is not only the websites you share links with but can also mean the websites you share hosting or an IP address with.

Dedicated hosting can be expensive so many of us use shared hosting, but who are you sharing with?  If another website on your server has been banned by Google this can affect your site’s rankings or could even get your site banned.  Sharing with websites that sell questionable products may also affect your site.

Shared hosting may also affect your website speed, if another site on the server is very busy it could use up your bandwidth and slow down your website.

Check who is sharing your server

If your website is sharing an IP address with hundreds of other sites than ask your hosting company to provide you with a dedicated IP address, there will probably be a small fee but it is well worth it.

Don’t Let Your Web Host Shut You Down

One of my web sites was recently shut down because of my spam filter!  My hosting company sent me an email explaining my site was causing a few problems on their server and I had 2 weeks to sort it out.  As my spam filter blocked the email I knew nothing about it until 2 weeks later when I found out my web site was down!

If I had replied to the email my host would have helped me sort out the problem, but as it appeared to them I ignored it they pulled the plug!  They would only reinstate my web site if I resolved the problem – which when the site is down is pretty difficult.  So my only choice was to move hosts.

Luckily I also have my own reseller hosting so after a few code changes from asp to php I was back up and running within 24 hours. My advice is to make sure you have you hosts support email address on your white list and monitor your web site so you know if it has gone down.

After I moved my site I have has no further problems and my support team have said if the error does reoccur they will help me resolve it and not disconnect the site after 2 weeks!

So if you want a more friendly hosting company with great support take a look at www.syteccomputers.com

Choosing a Hosting Company

There are now plenty of cheap hosting companies to choose from.  Too many in fact!  I recommend that you do not use a free  hosting service.  These can be unreliable, have poor suport and maybe not all the features you need.

If you are serious about your web business you should invest the $10 per month for good reliable hosting.

Make sure there is enough storage space and there is going to be enough bandwidth for when your web site gets successful.  If you are using audio or video especially you may need a lot of storage and bandwidth.

If you are using certain programs make sure you host can run them.  I prefer Unix/Linux based servers as they are cheaper and can run most scripts.  If you have asp code then you will need to use a Windows host which can be more expensive.

Most of my web site are hosted with Sytec Computers who can give you 15,00MB of storage and 300GB bandwidth for $5.75 per month.
