Do Link Exchanges Work?

I have just spent the past few hours going through some of the hundreds of links requests I have received over the past few weeks.  I would say I reject around 85% as they do not meet my criteria.  Even though my requirements are posted on the my websites people still fill in the form with the hopes I might add their link.  This is a waste of time for me and the person requesting the link.

So please, if you are requesting a link on someone’s website, read their requirements first. If you can’t meet there requirements move onto the next site.  You could always send an email explaining you don’t quite meet the requirements but you still think a link on your site would be advantageous to them.

Link exchanges should be benifical to both parties. When you exchnage links the page your link is add to is critical,

1. It must be relevant.
2. It must be visible to the search engines
3. It must not have hundreds of out going links.
4. Having your keyword in the anchor text is a big advantage

If these conditions are not meet then there is little point exchanging links.

So, some link exchanges can work, but be careful, if you start exchanging links with just anyone you could get your site into a “bad neigbourhood” which will have a negative effect on your website ranking.

Link exchanges can improve your search engine rankings but only if they provide your website with quality incoming links.

How to Get High Rankings with Natural Links

Some years ago, it was enough to get many inbound links to get high rankings on Google. It didn’t matter from where these links came as long as there were many links that pointed to your website.

As Google and other search engines continually improve the way they rank web pages, getting the right links is crucial if you want to be listed on the first search result page.

Unnatural links can be bad for your Google rankings

Google Has Learnt to Crawl Flash

Gaining top search engine rankings for Flash websites has always been a problem for Internet marketers.  We normally have to create other pages for Google to crawl to enable the site to get indexed.   Hopefully this is now going to be a thing of the past as Google have developed a new algorithm which will crawl Flash swf files following menus and buttons which should improve visibility of Flash content.

Google Wants To Send You Money!

I reviewed a new book by Joel Comms a few days ago called Adsense Secrets 4

I always like to test things out before I recommend a product and this book was no exception.  In fact this was the quickest return on investment I have ever had!  Within a couple of days I had my $9.95 back and more.

I have been running Google Adsense on a few of my web sites for some time and making a few pennies, around one or two dollars per day per web site.  After applying some of Joel’s techniques on just one of my web sites I have increased the income from less than $1 per day to more than $8 per day.  Sunday I earnt $8.20 from one site.

This may not sound a lot but if you do the math, $8 per day = $240 per month per site. 10 web sites = $2,400 per month, which equals $28,800 per year! With out selling anything or dealing with customers, in fact without doing much at all.

I am looking to build another 10, 20 or even 30 more web sites.  So with 40 sites I would be looking at a passive income of over $100,000 per year.

I hear you say, “It’s not that easy to build 40 web sites; that would take me months, or even years.”

Would you be interested to find out how you could get 85 ready built web sites with Adsense already built in and ready to go?  Well all you need to do is click on the link below

Search Engine Submission Scam

I am surprised to see how many professional web design companies are still offering a search engine submission service which is completely unnecessary.  Beware of ads saying:

We will submit your web site to 1,000s of search engines – Only £29.95 per month

Or:

Get listed in the Major search engines.  We will submit your site every 2 weeks – Only £150 per year.

Anything like this is a complete waste of money!

Here’s Why:
There probably aren’t 1,000 search engines on the Internet and if there was you don’t need your web site to be in all of them.  The 5 major search engines have over 90% of search engine traffic so getting your web site listed in the top 5 is all you need.
You don’t need to submit your web site every 2 weeks, in fact you don’t need to submit your web site at all!  All search engines use a crawler, (or bot) software which scans the Internet for web sites.  All you need is a link from a web site that is already listed on the major search engines and the search engines will find and list your site.

Please Note:  Getting your web site listed in the major search engines only requires one good link, getting your web site listed on the first page of the search engines usually takes a lot more.  So, submitting your web site to search engines is a waste of time, but submitting your web site to directories can be very helpful.

Introduction To Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is divided into two parts. On page optimization and off page optimization.

On page optimization is making sure you have the correct density of your keywords in the right place on your web pages. It is no good putting your keywords on your page hundreds of times, this will only get your site banned.  Your keywords need to be in the title tag, description and keyword meta tags, headings, alt tags and in the main body of your web page in the correct position and the correct number of times.  A good way to work out the correct keyword density is to look at the top 10 web sites for your keyphrase.  Getting this correct will not guarantee a top 10 position but it will help.

More import these days is off page optimization.  This means the number and quality of incoming links to your web site.  The text of the link also is important.  2 examples of the effect of off page optimization are:

1. Search for “click here” on Google.  You will find the Adobe web site is number 1.  The words “click here” do not appear on the page but thousands of web sites have a link to this page with the text “click here to download”

2. Search for “miserable failure” on Google and you will find George W Bush’s biography on the White House web site.  Obviously the words “miserable failure” are no where to be found on this web page but there are a few hundred incoming links with the keyphrase in the title.  This is known as a search engine bomb.

Search engine optimization is very time consuming so it is well worth buying software that can automate a lot of the work.  I use and recommend IBP.  Try the 30 day free trial at Axandra.com

Get Traffic to Your Web Site.

Now you have, bought your domain name, organized your hosting and uploaded your web site where is all the traffic?  Unfortunately the Internet is not a “Field of Dreams”.

To get visitors to your site your domain name (or url) needs to be seen.  You can advertise your domain name on your business letterhead and cards on the side of your car, in newspapers and magazines and even just tell people.  But if you want traffic in high numbers you will need to get your site on to the search engines. Not just anywhere but on the first 2 pages, and not just any search engine but the big three – Google, Yahoo and MSN.

To get your web site listed on the first 2 pages of the search engines you need to spend a lot of time optimizing your web site.  I will go into more detail about search engine optimization in a later blog but if you want to get traffic to your web site fast you will need to pay. One of the most economical ways advertising your web site is to use PPC (pay per click) such as Google Adwords or Yahoo Search Engine Marketing (formally Overture).

I recommend you start with Adwords because you can get traffic to your web site within 15 minutes.  Yahoo ads need to be approved and can take up to 5 days to become live. Google also has a lot more traffic than Yahoo.

You can learn how to use Google Adwords from Google but to be honest you could loose a lot of money experimenting and Google will be happy to take your money.  I will be posting some adword tips later but if you want to get started with Adwords today I recommend you take some advice from an expert.

There are plenty of books available that claim to teach you how to use Google Adwords but the only one I can recommend is “The Definitive Guide to Adwords” by Perry Marshall.  There is some great free information on Perry’s web site so check it out at www.perrymarshall.com
