Improve Your SERPS by Gaining Authority Backlinks

Authority backlinks
Backlinks are still one of the most important factors in gaining high rankings on the search engines, especially for competitive keywords.  But not all links are equal.  A good backlink from a relevant authority website can be worth a thousand times more than a link from a poor quality general directory site.

What are Authority Websites

Authority Sites have a number of key factors.

  • They have older domain names
  • They have many backlinks from other authority websites
  • They have many pages of high quality up to date content
  • They have a low bounce rate
  • The average time visitors stay on site is higher than other sites
  • They have a higher PR (page rank)

One way to look at this is that authority website can be trusted.

Authority sites aren’t always on the first page of Google but you should be able to identify authority websites within your niche.

How  do I get backlinks from Authority websites?

First you need to have some good quality content on your website that other sites will want to link to.  If you were the webmaster of an authority site would you link to low quality content?  Then simply ask for the link.  Take a good look around their website and identify where you think would be a good place to add your link, somewhere that would be useful to their visitors. Then explain to the webmaster why you think a link to your website would be beneficial to their websites readers.

Try and be helpful to the webmaster, if you find a broken link on their site, point this out to them and suggest they link to your site instead.

Many authority website now have blogs, so posting a useful comment can get you a backlink.  Most authority blogs will probably have nofollow set on their blog comment links but a nofollow link from an authority website still has value.

If you are unable to get a link from the authority site, take a look at their backlinks and try and get links from sites that link to them.

One way to get backlinks is to offer your writing services.  Webmasters are always looking for quality content so if you write an original article specifically for the authority site, they could publish it with a link to your site.

Don’t be tempted to sign up for special offers of 100’s or backlinks from authority sites.  These are normally profile links which are of little or no use and many get taken down by the webmasters.

Just remember, “If a link is easy to get it probably isn’t worth much”.

  • Hey Roger,

I think it’s important to get quality & relevant links back to your site. I used to be temppted to buy 10k forum signature links from fiverr but I know they’re worthless and would probably kill my rankings because Google will view them as SPAM. Def agree that quality over quantity is what really matters with backlinks.

  • Hi Noel,
Thanks for your comment. With all the changes Google has made this year you must be very careful when building links. There are loads of companies still offering services that worked last year but could get you banned now. As you say, you need quality rather than quantity and this goes for SEO services as well as backlinks.

  • Hi Roger,

A great article on what can be a ‘cloudy’ subject for some.

From the research I have done and reading the comments here, I think Google are looking for the more natural approach to how a site should build its authority.

Quality not quantity, as what’s previously been mentioned, is the key.

I think your question & answer service that you’ve got is a good idea so I’ve sent you some questions on the whole SEO subject.
